The Mistake
One of the easiest traps to fall into as an athlete is comparing yourself to others. Maybe it’s a teammate who always wins in practice, a rival you see dominating at tournaments, or even someone’s highlight video on social media.
Why It Hurts
Comparison steals your focus and joy. Instead of locking in on your own progress, you start measuring your worth by someone else’s performance. The truth is, everyone’s journey in wrestling looks different. We all have different body types, different experience levels, different learning curves. When you’re busy watching someone else’s path, you risk stumbling on your own.
A Tactic to Fix It
This week’s exercise is simple but powerful:
Shift your focus back to your growth. Take 5 minutes today to write down three areas where you’ve improved since last season. It could be physical (a quicker shot), mental (better confidence), or effort-based (pushing harder in conditioning). Keep that list in your wrestling bag or notebook as a reminder that progress is personal.
